Scary Pelicans!
Ok, I know judging from this photo, nothing spectacular is happening. Well, let me tell you - this was taken just moments after a very scary encounter with some pelicans!
Today I took Zoe to Luisenpark in Mannheim (GREAT place!) with Jill and Lucas. As we were strolling down the path, a flock (gaggle, herd, etc.?) of pelicans came walking toward us. Now, let me tell you, watching a group of pelicans that are about 3-4 feet tall walking toward you is a sight in itself. I was a little nervous, but hey, if they were wandering around the park, they must be friendly, right?
As they approached, I stopped the stroller, allowing them to pass us. One of them started pecking Zoe in the chest. Not hard, but just in a curious sort of way. Zoe looked a little scared, but said nothing. I was starting to say things like, "Oh my!", but again, it looked relatively harmless. That is, until the pelican decided to eat Zoe! All at once, the pelican opened it's beak and covered Zoe's head in one bite! It just opened wide and she seemed to disappear inside! I was screaming and screaming, looking at that pelican's pointy beak thinking it was going to really do some damage. Some pelican herder (I think that's his official title) came over - rather slowly I might add - and tapped the giant bird on the butt until it let go of her head. He continued walking away like nothing happened. The pelican did the same.
Zoe just watched the pelican walk away - I think she was just wondering what in the world just happened. Of course, my first thought after it all happened, was "Darn! I should have grabbed my camera!" :-) Afterward, we got such a good laugh about it. How surreal!
Now, looking at the photo, you'd think nothing of it - but as Paul Harvey says - now you know the rest of the story! :-)
